If you ever happen to visit Romania, there are a few things that you should be aware of. One of the most widely used gestures is to wave your hand when you see a friend and they are on the other side of the street. Another one is to nod when you agree with somebody.
When you meet a person for the first time, it is customary to shake hands and maintain eye contact, ask how they feel and be kind with them.
If the person is the same age, normally you will be more friendly, maybe you’ll even give him or her a hug. However if she’s a lady you may consider being more gentle to her, letting her have priority and opening the door for her because ladies have precedence.
If you are a guest in somebody’s house, take into account the fact that there are some houses in which you must take off your shoes and your coat, if you have one. Also do not be surprised if you see some people passing by churches and making the sign of the cross. This is due to the fact that they are very religious, most of them, and faith is very important for them.
We all live in a global village and there are gestures that have been left behind such as kissing the back of a lady’s hand, or taking your hat off when meeting somebody. On the other hand, younger generations tend to adopt behavior patterns from abroad, just like shaking hands when you meet new people no matter the gender.
Long story short, there are gestures that are 100 % sure, for instance smiling at people when you meet them or younger persons being considerate with elderly people by giving them priority.
