KELEMEN PETRA: Floss hard

Some time ago, I came across a commercial which promoted dental floss. Briefly, it includes three pictures and each of them have three things in common: in all pictures, we can observe adult couples; also, each man has food remaining in between their teeth.

Colgate dental flossAs for the third resemblance, the ad uses a clever way to capture our attention, turning into a true wow-factor when we finally realize what it hides.
When you take a quick look at the pictures, there’s nothing that gets your attention more than their smile. Or at least, what lies between their teeth.
As you look closer, you notice a few things out of common; you start feeling like something is not quite right regarding the pictures, but can’t really put your finger on it.
The third similarity is the physical defect each picture shows. In the first picture, the last thing that hits you is that the man is missing an ear.
Also, I’m not quite sure you noticed the ghost hand resting on the male subject’s shoulder in the second image.
Last, but not least, the advertisers were a bit too generous with editing the woman’s hand in the third picture, as it has six fingers instead of five.
Surprised enough?
This commercial made by Colgate wants to raise awareness about the fact that nothing captures your immediate attention more than a neglected oral hygiene.
Personally, I found it intriguing and aggressive, even a bit inconsiderate towards people with specific disabilities. Still, enlightening. After all, everything is double-sided, even relative, and that’s the beauty of diversity.
