A ZEN STORY

Zen stories are originated in Buddhist culture and they are full of knowledge and things which are worth meditating upon. I found out about them after a discussion in class with my English teacher. He told us a little story which made me me curious and I started to read them. I will share with you a Zen story that I like very very much and I hope that you will like it too.

“It was once a widower who lived with his 2 daughters who were very curious and intelligent. Girls always ask many questions, he knew how to respond to some, but at some he didn’t know the answer. As he wanted to give them the best education, one day he sent the girls on a vacation to a wise man. The wise man always knew how to respond their questions. At one point, one of the girls brought a blue butterfly and she planned to use it to deceive the wise man.

“What will you do?” asked her sister.

“I will hide the butterfly in my hands and I will ask the wise man if it’s alive or dead. If he says that it’s dead, I will open my hands and I will let him fly. If he says that it is alive, I will raise and I will crush the butterfly. And so, no matter the answer, he will be cheated.

The two girls went to the wise man and they found him meditating.

“I have here a blue butterfly. Tell me, wise, is it alive or dead?”

Very calm, the wise man smiled and said:

“It depends on you, because it is in your hands. So is our life, our present and our future.”

We don’t need to blame anyone when something doesn’t go right. We are responsible for what we acquire or not. Our life is in our hands, like the blue butterfly. It is up to us to choose what we want to do with it.

I really like this story because it sends you a message which is very deep and this message makes you realize that if you want to have something, you must work for it. You must choose you own destiny. It is your decision if you want to crush the butterfly or if you want to let him fly.

If you want to read more Zen stories, you can find a lot on the Internet.
