“The East” is a 2013 English-language thriller film directed by Zal Batmangly and starring Brit Marling, Alexander Skarsgard, and Ellen Page. Writers Batmangly and Marling spent two months in 2009 practicing freeganism and co-wrote a screenplay inspired by their experiences and drawing on thrillers from the 1970`s. The genre is drama, action and adventure, mystery and suspense.
The thriller tells the story of an FBI agent, Sarah Moss (Brit Marling). Moss is starting a new career at Hiller Brood, an elite private intelligence firm that ruthlessly protects the interests of its A-list corporate clientele. Handpicked for a plum assignment by the company`s head honcho, Sharon (Patricia Clarkson), Sarah goes deep undercover to infiltrate The East, an exclusive anarchist collective seeking revenge, against major corporations guilty of covering up criminal activity.
Determined, highly-trained and resourceful, Sarah soon integrates herself with the group, overcoming their initial suspicions and joining then on their next action or “jam”. It has an unexpected ending because living closely with the intensely committed members of The East, Sarah finds herself torn between her two worlds and awakens to the moral contradictions of her personal life.
Now, that I have presented a small part of the movie action, I think I need to introduce myself as a film viewer. I love adventure, action and comedy movies, but the movies that attract my attention, maintain the suspense and fascinate me are movies like this. In general, I think “The East” is a bit more persuasive on the psychology of its characters than on the politics of their actions.
The damaged, idealistic young people plotting to terrorize the wealthy and comfortable are seen as canaries in the coal mine, their rage a sign that something is terribly wrong.
What impressed me most was that their animus is also explained in ways that strain credibility. Benji, Izzy and Doc are motivated by grief, filial resentment and a desire for revenge. For them, the political is personal, which makes it a little less urgent for everybody else.
So, this movie is certainly one of the exciting movie I ever seen. I would give it five stars out of five, because it was able to maintain my attention till the end. I recommend it to all those who want to see a quality movie, I promise that they will not be disappointed!
P.S.: “Don`t forget, we are The East, and this is just the beginning! Lie to us, we’ll lie to you!”
