DIANA SCHIPOR: A “Christmas tale”

In the Christmas versions of Coca Cola commercials we can observe the magic world which is presented to us, we can see the joy and the magic on the people’s faces and we can live for a couple of seconds a Christmas tale which we dream of, as in the fairy-tales. We can approve the fact that we all impatiently wait for this holiday every year. Well, this might be a reason why the Coca Cola Company chooses to invest a lot of money in the Christmas versions of Coca Cola commercials.

The regular image of Santa Claus projected by them, the red lorries and the adorned trees seem to captivate the viewers attention. Because of the magic of the commercial, people will start subconsciously buying Coke with no particular reason than being able to partially live in the winter dream.

Are there also wicked things that are transmitted to us beyond the apparent warm, joy and beauty? In one of the commercials we can notice a Cola machine with “It’s X-mas!” written on it. Do you ask yourself why they took out the “Christ” from Christmas? The advert makes us believe that there is no Christmas without Santa Claus and Coca Cola, it displays to us in the same time a meaningless Christmas.

Everyone is celebrating but… what is the real reason of celebrating? We can let ourselves be mesmerized by all this little things but we can’t throw out the meaning of the holiday which is The birth of Christ and celebrating it should be a fulfillment for our souls, not more money for the Cola company.
