Teenagers nowadays face a big problem, and that is the stress, which is following them all the time, starting with the hours spent at school and ending with the stress based on family problems or problems of other nature. We asked our school psychologist Cristina Vaida to tell us about this phenomenon and its forms of manifestation among teenagers.
Reporter: What definition could you give this form of manifestation?
Psychologist: Stress is an organism answer when there is an imbalance between the requests that are required and the resources we have to solve this requests. Stress, by its nature, is felt also psychologically, but if it’s intensive and persists during the time, it has as consequence the impairment of physical condition.
Reporter: How does the stress manifest among teenagers?
Psychologist: Through all its forms of manifestation we remind: anxiety, nervousness, excessive worry. A stressed person is irritable, with lack of energy and power of concentration and has a hostile behavior. Physically, the stress symptoms can be seen by excessive tiredness, sadness, depress, affective disorder, insomnia, headaches, cramps, increase or decrease in appetite.
Reporter: What do you think are the common causes of stress at teenagers?
Psychologist: Sources of stress among teenagers: requirements and frustrations at school, expectations too high from their parents, negative feelings and thoughts about himself, social problems – with friends, with schoolmates, family problems, too high expectations from oneself or sentimental problems.
Reporter: Which are the consequences that stress bring with it?
Psychologist: Stress, at a beginner level, it’s beneficial for organism, because it stimulate us, puts us in action, makes us starting the desired action. At a high level, stress has negative effects that can later produce, in some cases, chronic disease like diabetes, heart problems, constant headaches.
