People from Daimler have collaborated with specialists from Grace to equip a bike with a 250 watts electric engine, powered by a 400 Wh litium-ion battery. The propulsion train aims to assist the cyclist when he pedals, increasing the distance which he can pedal without getting tired and the maximum speed. The currently offered autonomy is 100 km, but it can decrease if the cyclist is charging a mobile phone or if he require high power in constant mode from the propulsion system.
The good part at this bike is that it has a good system for kinetic energy recovery, what is giving to the cyclist ability to charge the battery at every brake. Additionally, the wheels are equipped with disc brakes, designed to provide exceptional performances. Electric bike’s debut will be at the beginning of 2012 and it will be sold in Europe and in the United States of America.
The electric bike’s market was by 200.000 units per year In Germany in 2010, and this had a remarkable growth, moving up to that level from 70.000 units in 2007. At European level, the electric bike’s market was by 200.000 units in 2007 and it has moved up to 500.00 units in 2009, respectively 700.000 units in 2010, from where the interest of Daimler to enter on this market.
