These words were said 70 years after the suffering that the Jews have been through in the Holocaust from 1941. The students of Onisifor Ghibu High School could hear more information about this story from one survivor of the disaster, Mrs. Gabriela Bone. The 86 year old lady is one of the few survivors of the Holocaust, in which 6 million people died.
The disaster began one night of November 1941, when Transylvania handed the Jews who were told to leave their houses and dragged to ghettos. All their goods were taken and their refusal was the sentence to death. They were told that they would work at a manufacture, but the brutal truth was different. After 7 days spent in a carriage for animals, the Jews arrived at Auschwitz and their lives depended on their physical condition; the left hand sent them to death and the right hand gave them a chance to survive.
Mrs. Gabriela was only 16 year old and if she hadn’t lied about her age, she would have got killed. She was separated from her family, who died in a crematory, thus she remained only with her sister.
A light in the darkness appeared when the manager of the Siemens factory recruited 300 persons, among them Mrs. Gabriela and her sister. In that way they could escape from the Germans.
The sufferance from Auschwitz and the Siemens factory brought Gabriela Bone at the weight of 15 kilograms and in hospital bed for 6 months, but this couldn’t defeat her wish to survive. Now she is saying: „I wanted to survive, just this kept me alive, I wanted to tell everyone what I’ve gone through”.
The applause of the students brought a smile on the survivor’s face: “I knew that some day people won’t believe that this happened”. (DENISA IENCIU)
