ROMINA DUTCAŞ: Rape in broad daylight

“The East” is a eco-thriller movie directed by Zal Batmanglij and starred by Brit Marling, Alexander Skarsgard and Ellen Page. It’s based on a screenplay written by Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling, the main character. The movie was released in 2013.

The thriller tells us the story of a former FBI agent who infiltrates in an anarchist group. The action is set in the United States where a group of eco-terrorists want to have people confronted with te consequences of their actions.

The group where Sarah infiltrates is formed by: Izzy, Luca the good-hearted, Doc the team medic, Eve, Tess the hacker and Benji, the group leader.

In the movie, Sarah is torn between her two worlds: the East’s mansion and her home in Washington D.C. The group is trying to show people that a medicine named Denoxine is toxic, which gets people mad. At a party the group give them the taste of their own medicine and they get brain damaged after a while. In their second mission Izzy and the group are trying to disclose the fact that a chemical factory which includes Izzy’s father too, is polluting water with a lot of litter.

A breathtaking moment is when Izzy gets shot by a gun and in spite of Doc and Sarah’s help, she dies.

In the end, Sarah decides to be on her own and she keeps the list with the members from Hiller Brood for her own. In spite of the fact that she loves Benji, she refuses to give him the list because she knows that she might be in danger as she is on the list too. This is the reason why I like her very much.

I like the movie because of Sarah’s decision in the end. I would give it five stars out of five because all the scenes were simply amazing and the characters played very well their roles. I am deeply impressed by the movie because the eco-terrorists succed in revealing the truth. This movie is terribly phenomenal.
