The movie “The East” is an action and thriller movie directed and written by Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling, both staring in the film. The movie directors spent two months in 2009 to write the screenplay which was inspired by their life and experience. This film is set in the United States of America these days.
Released in 2013, it is about a former FBI agent from the firm Hiller Brood who needs to infiltrate in The East, an ecologic and anarchist organization, to seek revenge against major corporations. The agent calls herself Sarah in order to not be revealed and she joins local drifters in hitching on trains. Here, she meets Luca, one of The East’s members. Because she was injured, Luca helps her and takes her to an abandoned house in the woods. In order to stay with them, Sarah was tested and she fails but she is recruited to fill the missing member, Eve, who left in the morning because of her.
Sarah, the main character, succeeds in infiltrating very well and she finds out about the damage that has been done by other companies. After hearing that, she decides to give them a taste of their own medicine. At a party, the organization plans to poison the opponent company with what they sell, but something goes wrong: Izzy is shot. Moreover, Sarah offers to help by pulling the bullet out of Izzy’s body, but sadly she dies and they bury her near the house.
It has an unexpected ending because Benji takes only Sarah to complete the final jam. By the time they arrive in the city, Sarah realizes that Benji wants to reveal her and he asks for a list of Hiller Brood agents, but she doesn’t give him that list. So, she becomes an independent woman making a difference in her own way.
In conclusion, I think this film is really exciting and I am thankful that I had the opportunity to watch it. It was very interesting and fascinating to see how Sarah became so strong in the end and how she managed all the situations she was in.
I would give it five stars out of five because it was captivating and I liked its awakening message.
