The Leaf

Once, a little girl lived with her grandfather. After a period of time, the girl got seriously ill, so the old man paid a doctor to come and see her. After the doctor consulted her, he went to talk to her grandfather. The doc said that when the last leaf from the walnut tree in front of the house falls down, the little girl will die because her disease is extremely serious. Because the door was half-open, she could hear the doctor’s hurtful words. Her grandfather tried to pretend that everything is alright, even though the girl knew about her awful condition. Slowly, autumn knocked in. As the days passed, the little girl watched patiently the falling leaves. Finally, one single leaf remained on the tree, but by that time, the little girl started feeling better. Slowly, she completely recovered. One day, without her grandfather knowing, she climbed the walnut tree to take a closer look at the last leaf which wouldn’t fall. She was amazed when she noticed that the leaf was actually held in place by a wire. (KELEMEN PETRA)
