Romania doesn’t own a pretty picture in Europe, actually nowhere else. In my opinion, we lack displaying values and promoting them abroad. Most of the foreign people don’t know where Romania is situated on the map and those who know have a very bad idea about us. Mircea Vasilescu, editor of Dilema Veche, says that we start to fell like an unwelcome guest in Europe.
EU citizens associate the name of Romania with Dracula, car thieves, cigarette smuggling, miserable orphanages and poverty. Many consider it a state of gypsies because of their ubiquity. Romanians working in other countries make great efforts to be acknowledged as good Europeans. “We begin to feel like an uninvited guest who, after the sacrifice made to buy new clothes, is still not pretty elegant to the famous members of the club” Mircea Vasilescu, editor of the weekly DilemaVeche, notices. The more we try to integrate, the more we are seen as thieves or delinquents.
The salaries are tiny but they do not compare with the work that you do for that petty money. In Romania you see roads with potholes or unfinished ones, due to lack of money, which of course was stolen by someone, only here you see monuments and landscapes destroyed, only here you see at every corner a beggar or an abandoned child, only here when you go to a football game you attend a boxing fight, only here singers without voice are promoted.
Is also normal for Romania to have a bad image in the whole world, because people, we do it with our own hands. We are lucky because UE accepted us, and the fact that people from other countries are afraid of us or disregard us is all thanked to the gypsies that embarrass the country or the people that have not been well educated. That’s why the French say that “the national sport in Romania isn’t the football but begging”.
I’m sorry to say it but I’m ashamed of the country I’m living, probably that’s why many Romanians leave for other countries, maybe because of shame or the fact that they don’t have enough money to live a decent life. I think that Romania is considerate a disaster all over Europe. (IOSZA ANDREA JESSICA)
