A matter of digital literacy

Dear Sirs and Madams

I am writing to express my concern regarding the recent decision to prohibit the use of smartphones in schools. While I understand the intent behind this measure, I believe it may not be the most beneficial approach for students in today’s digital age.

Firstly, please consider the fact that we are living in a time where students are digital natives. Smartphones, when used responsibly, can provide valuable educational resources, access to online information, and learning tools that enhance the classroom experience.

Secondly, this decision may inadvertently disadvantage students in preparing for future careers. Many professional roles today require digital literacy, and even manual jobs increasingly rely on technology. Restricting access to smartphones limits students’ exposure to the very tools they will need in the workforce.

Moreover, banning smartphones may not address the real issue at hand. Instead of prohibiting their use, teaching students how to manage technology responsibly would foster better habits and reduce this issue.

To put it briefly, this decision risks doing more harm than good.

All things considered, I would be very grateful if you could reconsider the policy and explore more balanced alternatives that allow smartphones in a controlled, educational context.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

VANESA PERȚE
