Each and every one of us had to face at least once in our lives a situation in which lying was the only way. Often we lie to get out of an uncomfortable situation, but sometimes it’s just part of our behavior. To find out a little extra information about lying, we asked our school counselor, Vaida Cristina, to answer some of our questions with respect to this subject.
REPORTERS: What’s the definition of lying?
COUNSELOR : Lying is an action through which we deliberately hide a part of the information or turn the story around, usually to bluff a situation out or to save somebody from suffering. Studies have shown that lying is a survival mechanism. Appearantly, certain parts of the brain show high activity under the influence of a lie. Besides spontaneous lying, there is also the all-set type of lie, which is planned, thought over many times and is unforgivable.
REPORTERS: What are the effects of lying?
COUNSELOR: Lying may have long or short term effects, just as it may have more or less serious consequences, starting from a simple white lie to get rid of an unwanted chore, to hiding a more grotesque truth.
REPORTERS: How do we know when somebody is lying to us?
COUNSELOR: Look for the disaccord between body language and their way of speaking, eye contact, faking emotions and unexpected questions.
